Lesson 6 – Worship of the New Testament Church (Part 2)

Memory Verse:  Revelation 4:11 – “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.”

Areas in which the New Testament churches “worshipped” God:

(continued from lesson 5)

1)      Singing (Ephesians 5:19; Colossian 3:16; 1 Corinthians 14:15; James 5:13).

a)      What spiritual purposes are accomplished by singing?

b)      What types of songs are we told to sing?  What are the differences in these types of songs?

c)      Is singing just for a few talented people of the congregation?

d)      If we find no example or command to use instrumental music in the New Testament, can we assume we have authority to use instruments?

e)      See Chart on translation of Greek word “psallo”, which is argued by some to authorize instruments of music.  If all of these translators over several centuries from various denominations translate this word “make melody” in our hearts or “sing”, what justification can we find for reading musical instruments into Paul’s words in Eph. 5:19?

1)      Teaching and preaching

a)      What does Romans 10:14-15 say about the importance of teachers and preachers of the gospel?

i)        How did the Ethiopian demonstrate the need for a teacher (Acts 8:29-31)?

ii)       What must each Christian be “ready” to do (1 Peter 3:15; Ezra 7:10)?

b)      If we are to teach others, what attitudes and disposition must we have in order to be effective (2 Timothy 2:24-26)?

c)      Read 1 Thes. 2:4-8 and 1 Tim. 4:12-16.  Write down the actions and attitudes that are essential for teachers and preachers.

2)      Praying

a)      Read the verses below and answer the questions that follow (It would be better to read each passage and see how it will answer one of the questions below):

i)        Matthew 6:5-15

ii)       Luke 11:1-13

iii)     Luke 18:1-14

iv)     Acts 4:24-31

v)      Acts 12:5

vi)     1 Cor. 14:15-17

vii)   Eph. 6:18,19

viii)  Phil. 4:6-7

ix)     Col. 4:2-3

x)      1 Tim. 2:1-4

xi)     James 1:5-8

xii)   James 5:13-18

(1)   How was prayer used by the early church as they gathered together?

(2)   How was prayer used by individuals not gathered with the church?

(3)   What were some guidelines given for prayer?

(4)   What are the benefits that come from talking with our Father?

b)      There is so much more to be said about prayer, but these verses will give you a great start in your growth to have a close and intimate prayer life with your Father in heaven.
